Feeling the Burn SF

§ March 14th, 2011 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA § Tagged , , , , , § No Comments

I have been on a roll with some intense workouts and I didn’t want going to San Francisco to slow me down.  My girlfriend Pam had told me about a new exercise studio called Burn SF so I called her up and told her to book us on Saturday morning.

Through all of my ‘Adventures in Fitness in LA and OC’ I have been to several ballet barre and group Pilates classes and have loved them all.  I was assuming this class to be similar to these trends and I was correct but I under-estimated the intensity of this workout.  I was seriously feeling the burn last Saturday morning at 9am in Tamyra Bugarin‘s class on Irving Street. § Read the rest of this entry…

AIF Post: Dana Point Turkey Trot

§ November 30th, 2010 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA § Tagged , § No Comments

I ran my very first 5K race on Thanksgiving Day last week.  Woohoo!  If you have been keeping up on my posts on AIF or Embody Fitness you know this is a BIG thing for me.  For years I have been saying, “I am allergic to running.”  Whether it be from the shin splints, the plantar fasciitis, the burning lungs or the cold hands . . . I couldn’t stand to run more than to my parking meter occasionally.

It helped to have strength in numbers.  My friends Susan and Adrian, her Mom Tricia, my Uncle Doug and I all headed down to the Dana Point Harbor to get in our workout before the eating began on Thursday.  We were all a part of the Hodel Briggs Winter Team through a friend of Susan’s.  We had matching yellow shirts on and could easily find one of the dozen other yellow shirts scattered around the event.  This element of camaraderie really helped push me throughout the day.

Check out the new post on AIF: Here we go . . . . . .!

by Kendra Cannoy

While cleaning up the rental house in Palm Springs yesterday I said, “Well, it is crazy from here on to the end of the year.”  Everyone agreed and we all took a deep breath while realizing  our indulgent weekend was only the beginning.

So what I am saying is I don’t have a fitness adventure to report on today.  I could lie and say that I swam laps in the pool last weekend or did that hike I was talking about on Friday but  . . . . Santa is watching.

What I want to help you start thinking about is a strategy for the holiday season.  It can be a slippery slope.  In my cleanse program I teach people to stay on track 80% of the time after they finish the program.  That can be easier said than done.

New Post on AIF: GST – Redefining Exercise Technique

§ September 27th, 2010 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA § Tagged , , § No Comments

Oh where to begin!  This was a fabulous adventure that came up last minute and could very well change the way I see exercise technique.

Late Friday night I got around to reading my emails and found on Vital Juice that this new studio was offering free, 45 minute demo classes the next morning.  I jumped at the chance.  I got an auto reply back that said the classes were full and they were working on adding new times.  I ended up being able to join in the regularly scheduled class that was over an hour long and taught by the owner and creator of the technique, Anna Rahe.  What a treat.

Underground Wellness Radio – A Favorite Resource

§ September 22nd, 2010 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA, Nutrition § Tagged § No Comments

There is so much information to keep up on health and wellness these days.  A few weeks ago I was recommending Agave Nectar to my clients as a lower glycemic sweetener and today I hear it has just as much fructose as other syrups.  ***Sigh . . . Starting up my weight loss cleanse business has made it more important for me to keep up on these changing facts.

One day I stumbled upon the Underground Wellness site and have been a very frequent visitor ever since.  Sean Croxton is the creator of the site and he does a tremendous job at bringing current information and hot topics to the site.   Mostly I visit the “Radio” section where you can download past episodes of their weekly broadcast.  On UW Radio, he has interviewed a who’s-who of the health and fitness industry, including Sally Fallon, Paul Chek, William Wolcott, Nina Plank, Mark Sisson, Dr. Robert Lustig, and Julia Ross. § Read the rest of this entry…

New Post on Adventures in Fitness LA: Consultation with Dr. Joe Ferrara PhD

§ September 6th, 2010 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA § Tagged , , , § No Comments

Leona and I decided to challenge ourselves by buying a package of 5 boot camp sessions on Living Social (one of our favorite online deal finders in the Los Angeles area.)  At an incredible low price of $25 we decided we had nothing to lose but body fat.

When I contacted Adrian at West Coast Boot Camp to schedule our first class he informed me that there was a nutrition consultation included in the package.  To be honest I initially declined the offer thinking that we were both pretty dialed in with our diets and I wasn’t thrilled about making a drive out to La Canada.  On second thought, in the name of research for Adventures in Fitness and getting the complete experience, I called him back and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Joe Ferrara PhD for the following Saturday.

I was pleasantly surprised with the consultation experience and so happy that I changed my mind.

New Post on Adventures in Fitness LA: Night Hike to Overlook Santa Monica

§ August 23rd, 2010 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA § Tagged , , , , § No Comments

Check out my new post on Adventures in Fitness LA where I join friends on a night hike into Topanga State Park.

Here is an excerpt or click here for the full article:

My colleague Dave Cantarella suggested I join he and his friend, Steve, on a night hike in Santa Monica.  My reply was, “Sure!  Will you keep the bats out of my hair?”  He upped the ante by saying,  “Yes and the Mountain Lions too.”  Ahhh that’s a relief.

Since I am prepping for my cleanse program, doing something fun and healthy on a Saturday night seemed to fit. I packed my water and “fizzy tab” for a little late night energy and chose to wear long pants in case it got cool (okay . . . really it was to keep any critters from crawling up my legs.)  We agreed to meet at 7:30pm to begin our hike.

New Post on Adventures in Fitness LA: Working out with Kendra Cannoy

§ August 10th, 2010 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA § Tagged , , § 1 Comment

There’s a new post on Working out with Yours Truly on my other site, www.AdventuresinFitnessLA.com.   Here’s an excerpt, and if you want to read the whole thing, you can click HERE.

Does this look different? I know it does, but it’s hard for me to see sometimes.

You see, about a year ago, I decided that I needed to get in shape. I’d been sitting down for about a year, writing my master’s thesis and then working a corporate desk job, and I’d been eating terribly for more than a year. I’d been back in Orange County for a few months, and I decided that I wasn’t taking the necessary initiative to get myself in shape, and that I needed help and guidance. It occurred to me that my old friend Kendra might be willing to work with me, so I called her out of the blue to ask if she could help me– and she said yes.

Fifteen months after our first session, and I’ve dropped three sizes (I’m a 12 on the right, and I’m a 6 now), revitalized my career and my life in general, and I feel like I’ve still got room to improve in my overall health and fitness– which feels great.

Synchronized Swimming is Alive & Well in Los Angeles

§ August 5th, 2010 § Filed under Adventures In Fitness LA § Tagged , , , , § No Comments

synchro by neate photos

While looking out for some new fitness adventures to “dive into,” it occurred to me to see if synchronized swimming was going on in our area, and I was actually pretty surprised to find out that it is.

Los Angeles Synchro has a website full of photos, information about the sport, and a bustling schedule of competitions for their many teams. Here’s an excerpt from their site:

The sport of synchronized swimming has come a long way since its early beginnings as “water ballet” in Esther Williams’ movies. Today’s synchronized swimmer must have the grace of a ballerina, the strength and flexibility of a gymnast, the skills of a speed swimmer and water polo player, the lungs of a pearl diver, and the endurance and stamina of a long distance runner. Add to that the requirement for split-second timing and a dramatic flair for musical interpretation and choreography. § Read the rest of this entry…
